ElderShield Assessmentis a long-term care insurance scheme that assists in defraying costs. Elder Shield was first introduced in September 2002 by the Ministry of Health as a severe disability insurance policy. It provides minimal financial protection to those who require long-term care, especially in their senior years. It provides a monthly cash payment for up to 72 months to aid with out-of-pocket costs associated with the care of severely disabled people.

How much does ElderShield pay out?
ElderShield members will get monthly payouts of $300 or $400 for up to 5 or 6 years. It is applicable only if they suffer a major impairment, depending on when they originally joined the programme.
ElderShield has two distinct plans to choose from:

How do I become a member of Elder Shield?
If you were born in 1980 or after, you will be automatically covered under Care Shield Life at the end of 2020. It is not necessary for you to join ElderShield. You can re-join ElderShield if you were born in 1979 or earlier and previously opted out by contacting any ElderShield insurer (e.g. Aviva, Great Eastern, or NTUC Income). All three insurers offer the same rates and payouts under ElderShield. A medical examination will be required of you. If you have a pre-existing medical problem, the insurance company may reject your application.
Accredited ElderShield Assessors conduct ElderShield and Interim Disability Assistance Programme for the Elderly (IDAPE) assessments. ElderShield and MyCare use the identical claim forms and panels of Appointed Assessors. The Claim Form just has to be completed once.
