The Mexican team arrived at the Cup with two clear objectives: defend the title achieved in the World Cup in Russia and win the Copa América.     Club América de Fútbol is a professional soccer club based in Mexico City. The team competes in Liga MX and has won five league titles (the first in 1929 and the most recent in 2018) and two CONCACAF Champions League titles (1997, 2007). Cruz Azul, founded on May 4, 1892, is one of the oldest clubs in Mexico and one of the most successful in the country. They have reached the final of the national Cup 16 times, winning it three times (1935, 1949, 1989).

    How did they get to where they are today?

    Cruz Azul Club de Fútbol is a professional soccer club from Mexico City, the country’s capital. The team has played in Liga MX since 1968 and in the Mexican national soccer competition, the Copa Libertadores, since 1975. They reached their first Liga MX final in 2000, losing to UNAM Pumas. Cruz Azul regained their crown as Liga MX champions in 2006 and reached the 2007 CONCACAF Champions League final against Atlético Madrid but lost 2–1 after extra time. In 2008 they were runners-up in the Clausura tournament but then went on to win the Apertura and Clausura tournaments in 2009 to become Liga MX champions for a record fourth time.

    Cruz Azul finished second in their group at the 2010 FIFA World Cup behind Barcelona of Spain and entered the quarterfinals. Where they were beaten 3-1 by eventual champions, the Netherlands. Cruz Azul qualified for its sixth consecutive Copa Libertadores after topping its group in the 2014 Apertura tournament with victories over Pachuca, Toluca and Chivas USA.     Club América and Cruz Azul have a longstanding rivalry dating back to their days as the two most successful clubs in Mexico. The two teams have met in numerous international competitions, including the FIFA Club World Cup and the CONCACAF Champions League. The rivalry has become especially fierce recently, as both teams have become the main competitors in Mexico’s premier league.

    The rivalry between Club América and Cruz Azul dates back to the beginnings of Mexican soccer. Both clubs were formed in 1928 and competed in the first official national championship, contested by teams from Mexico City. At the time, Cruz Azul was managed by José Barbosa Sánchez. Who would become one of the most successful coaches in Mexico? Club América finished third behind Atlante and Pumas, respectively. But Barbosa Sánchez convinced the Mexican Football Federation to give Cruz Azul its division within the competition. This led Cruz Azul to become one of the most popular clubs in Mexico and helped it achieve greater success than Atlante or Pumas for decades to come.

    In 1942, Club América declared itself a professional club after being relegated from Liga MX due to financial irregularities. This led to a longstanding rivalry between the two clubs and ushered in an era of supremacy for Club América. Over the next few decades, Club América won.

    On Wednesday, Club América will take on Cruz Azul in the first leg of their semifinal match. And there is a good chance that this will be one of the most exciting matches of the Clausura.

    América finished fourth in the Apertura standings behind Toluca, Pumas and Cruz Azul. In their participation in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores, they beat River Plate (1-0). Atlético Nacional (2-1) and Cerro Porteño (3-1) before losing to Barcelona by a score of 3-2. in the semifinals.

    Cruz Azul finished fourth in the Clausura standings, behind Atlético Nacional, Tijuana and Club América. They reached the semifinal by beating León (3-2), Santos Laguna (5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1) and Veracruz (4-0).
