Manchester United’s teenage forward JJ Gabriel looks increasingly likely to leave the club, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both actively in talks over a potential move — and PSG and Bayern Munich also circling.

    Where Things Stand

Gabriel, just 15, and his family are currently in Barcelona, where discussions with the Catalan club and their fierce LaLiga rivals Real Madrid are said to be progressing. Earlier this week, Gabriel and his representatives formally requested to leave United, hoping to be de-registered and free to move elsewhere. United’s leadership had been holding out hope they could convince him to stay — he’s contracted through the end of the season — but the situation now looks to be heading toward an exit.

The timing of the request is notable: it came right after United’s 5-0 win over Sabah in the UEFA Youth League, a match where Gabriel scored a hat-trick. He hasn’t trained with the club since submitting that request, and he was also left out of England’s most recently announced youth squads, despite having represented the country at U17 level previously.

The FIFA Angle That Could Shape His Next Move

There’s a specific wrinkle here worth understanding: a known FIFA loophole means Gabriel could potentially leave United for a European club once he turns 16 on October 6, provided he secures a European passport — something he could obtain through either of his parents. Any such move would still need FIFA’s sign-off, so nothing is guaranteed even if that path opens up.

    United’s Manager Is Urging Caution

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick addressed the situation directly on Friday, and his message was less about tactics and more about protecting a teenager caught in an intense spotlight. He emphasized that Gabriel is still a young boy, and stressed the importance of handling the situation sensibly given the scrutiny involved, rather than playing it out publicly. His overall point was that Gabriel’s wellbeing matters more than however the transfer situation ultimately resolves.

A Reminder of Just How Talented He Is

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson didn’t hold back on Gabriel’s ability, calling him an extraordinary talent and suggesting the real complication lies with the people around him — his agents and family — rather than the player himself. Merson pointed to a broader trend among today’s young stars: watching peers like Max Dowman at Arsenal and Rio Ngumoha getting real first-team opportunities at Liverpool likely fuels the sense among similarly gifted teenagers that they should already be playing at the top level too. He noted that this kind of push for early first-team involvement was almost unheard of when he was playing, even at 16.

If Gabriel does leave, Merson was blunt about what it would mean for United: a genuine loss of a special talent, and one that every major club in world football would be eager to snap up.
