Kenneth R. Chien earned his undergraduate degree in biology and his Medical Doctorate from Temple University’s school of medicine. After receiving his Ph.D., Chien studied cardiology and internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Kenneth R. Chien worked for the University of California at San Diego for five years. Between 2000 and 2005, he was their director of Molecular Medicine.
Chien moved on from there to the Massachusetts General Hospital. He worked there as the director of Cardiovascular Research until 2012. During this time, he also directed the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.
His work in molecular biology and stem cell research prepared him for the work he would do with the Karolinska Institutet.
He joined the Karolinka Institutet in 2013, excited for the opportunity to pursue groundbreaking medical research in Sweden.
Moderna Therapeutics Controversy
All was going well for Kenneth R. Chien after he co-founded Moderna Therapeutics with Derrick Rossi and Bob Langer. Moderna Therapeutics was founded in 2011.
However, in 2016, employees at Moderna Therapeutics came forward and told the press that Moderna was an unhealthy work environment.
The employees complained of overbearing and angry bosses, unreasonable expectations, unjustified firings, and oppressively long hours.
The attitude at Moderna was one that put scientific progress above all else. Employees said their supervisors did not have patience for the setbacks and delays that are normally part of scientific progress.
Moderna does seem to have recovered well from this scandal, however. They are now extremely successful in the wake of their COVID-19 vaccine development.
