Trotting Texas Trails: 5 Great Places to Go Horseback Riding in Texas

When you think of Texas, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? You most likely think of cowboys and horses, of course! Texas is known for the Alamo, some great Texas BBQ, and all the wonderful Texas trails just waiting to be explored. 

When in Texas, there’s no doubt you’ll want to spend the majority of your days outside. The weather is great more days than not and there’s always something new to do. One of the best ways to discover everything Texas has to offer is via horseback. 

Horseback riding through some of the trails in Texas allows you to not only explore the trails but also have a unique experience you’ll never forget. Thankfully, there are several riding trails in Texas to choose from. Continue reading below to find out more!

1. Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. It’s located in the Texas Panhandle and is full of beauty and wonder. It also makes an ideal spot for horseback riding. 

Inside the park, you’ll find a 1,500-acre equestrian area where you can freely ride horses. There are many trails for you to ride down and plenty of campsite areas as well. Feel free to bring your own horse here and spend the day riding the trails. 

If you don’t have your own horse, then you can choose to schedule a horseback riding tour at the park. You’ll be given one of the park’s horses to ride. There are also many other fun activities to consider when visiting the canyon. 

You can sign up for a ranger program to learn more about the park’s history and the nature surrounding it. During the summer, you can enjoy the TEXAS Outdoor Musical, plus more. If you’re looking for a place where you can ride your horse and spend the entire day there, then Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the place to be. 

2. The Texas Hill Country 

Located in the Texas Hill Country is Southern Trail Rides. When you schedule a tour, you’ll be able to explore the Texas Hill Country in a unique setting with a trained guide. Here, you’ll follow a guide who’ll take you on a scenic tour of the area via horseback. 

There’s no better way to relax and take in all the beauty of nature around you than via horseback. You can also choose to take a horseback riding tour through the Victory Cheval Estate. This 100-acre estate is home to tall oak trees and open green pastures. 

You’ll also pass by a graveyard during your tour and learn a bit of Texas history while there. If you have little ones joining you, then you also have the option to schedule a Little Dude Ride experience. This experience includes 20 minutes of brushing, a 20-minute arena ride, and then a 20-minute trail ride.  

It’s the perfect option for children 10 and younger. 

3. Copper Breaks State Park

In Copper Breaks State Park, there’s a lot to do and see. You can go for a swim or cast a line to see what you can catch. You can bike and hike some of the available trails and even camp here if you desire. 

At night, stargazing is a must as you’ll be able to see a sky full of stars and wonder. Aside from all these wonderful activities, don’t forget to explore the horseback riding trails as well. There’s a 3.8-mile Equestrian Trail where you can pass by canyons and tons of wildlife. 

For these trails, you will need to bring your own horse, however. Be sure to provide proof of a negative Coggins test as well to ensure the safety of all horses. 

4. The Beach in Corpus Christi

Who said horseback riding trails are limited to canyons and lush greenery? Mix things up a bit and head over to the beach in Corpus Christi for a horseback riding adventure like no other. That’s right, you can schedule a horseback riding beach tour. 

People of all ages and of all experience levels are welcome to come and ride these beach trails on horseback. You can choose a one-hour tour or a sunset tour. You’ll love riding your horse through the soft sands and cool waters.

When your tour is complete, you can stick around a while to enjoy a day or evening at the beach.

5. Boerne, Texas 

Located in Boerne, Texas is Stricker Trail Rides. These trails are about 25 minutes northwest of San Antonio. You will need to schedule an appointment for either an individual ride or a group ride. 

The horses are experienced in riding the trail, so they’ll know where to go, making the trip much easier on the riders. Your main focus will be on sightseeing and sitting back and enjoying the ride. Here, you’ll experience very quiet scenery among the unique trails.

Even inexperienced riders will feel comfortable riding these horses through the trails. The staff will even take their time matching each guest with the perfect horse for them.
