How to Make Your KT Tape Application Last Longer

Must Read

Kinesiology tape has been around for over 30 years, and since its inception, one of its main features was its ability to stay attached to the skin for an extended time. Dr. Kensio Kase, the creator of the K-Tape, was determined to create a product whose adhesive would not fail despite the sweat, water, and other elements that the tape might endure.

Initially designed for professional and amateur athletes, the tape needed solid materials and would require constant stretching and pulling from the biomechanical movements. Of course, some sports were more intense than others, but the tape would be intended for everyone, no matter the sport or level of participation.

The tape’s life is twofold; firstly, how long the tape can stay on the body, and more importantly, how can the application of the tape last longer. The article intends to provide tips on application, maintenance, and removal. The tape can last years as long as it is kept in a dry place.

Correct Application

While it may be as simple as pulling, cutting, removing tape liner, and pressing to the skin if the area is not prepared right, hair can cause the tape to start peeling; in some more hairy situations, the tape might not find purchase against the skin. This results in the tape sticking to hair and is a pretty painful situation as the tape would need to come off, and when it does, it usually pulls all the hairs out.

You will need the following items: Clippers, shaving cream, a razor, Kinesiology sports  tape, a washcloth, soap, water, and a dry towel.

First and foremost, ensure you understand how the tape is applied and how many strips of tape you need, and have these precut. Secondly, wash the area with soap and water, and dry it with a towel. Use clippers if the area is this thick with hair, and once that is done, apply shaving cream and shave the area to make it smooth. Then dry the area thoroughly.

Apply the tape as instructed, pulling and leaving slack as indicated. Once the tape is on there, rub it vigorously to activate the adhesive, and make sure to rub it all along its length to prevent corners from lifting and starting to peel off.

The adhesive on the original K-Tape by Dr. Kensio Kase was initially designed to stay on for five days. The adhesive would start to fail soon after and fall off eventually. If the tape is well looked after, the tape can stay on for the entire duration and still look clean.

What you’ll need:

  • K-Tape
  • Soap
  • Wash Cloth
  • Razor
  • Shaving Cream
  • Towel

Kinesiology tape was developed by Kase using a unique cotton and nylon combination. It is made to simulate skin flexibility so that you can move through your whole range of motion. Even as you exercise or take showers, the medical-grade adhesive on the tape is water-resistant and powerful enough to remain in place for three to five days.

The tape also features a medicated adhesive that sticks to the skin. Usually, the medicine contained in the tape is Diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The medicine helps ward off pain.

While the most common occurrence for using Kinesiology tape is to help prevent swelling and inflammation. People use it to help correct techniques and improve performance. The tape works as a constant reminder that the person is recovering from injury and should not try to exert themselves.

What is the advantage of wearing K-Tape?

Without resorting to drugs or surgery, it gently permits the free flow of blood and lymphatic fluid to clear and treat the inflammation. This tape has been designed to support muscles, enhance circulation, promote internal healing, lessen the risk of further muscle damage, and preserve motion.

Five advantages of using Kinesiology tape:

Reduced Discomfort: Kinesiology tape helps to disrupt and diffuse pain by gently applying pressure.

Increased Circulation and Reduced Inflammation: The tape can aid in removing congestion while enabling adequate lymphatic and oxygenated blood circulation. As irritants are flushed out by circulation, inflammation and chemical accumulation are reduced, promoting a quick recovery.

Enhancement of Posture and Muscle Support: Correct posture can be gently supported by taping places that err from it. The effective tape also improves the efficiency of weak muscles, lessens discomfort and fatigue, and guards against cramping, overextension, and over-contraction.

Improved Athletic Performance: Taping can improve performance by stabilizing unstable joints and applying gentle pressure to “sleeping” muscles. Kinesiology tape teaches the body to become independent and effective, unlike other assistive technologies that may cause dependence on them for stability and support.

Supported endogenous analgesic system: The tape allows the body’s natural recovery processes to occur. (The terms “endogenous” and “analgesic” refer to internal and pain relief, respectively.)

According to reports, kinesiology taping has beneficial physiological benefits on the lymphatic and circulatory systems and the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints. Why was it made?

Dr. Kensio Kase, a Japanese Chiropractitioner, would often be frustrated at the medical options available during the 1970s. Often he would have to tell his patients they would need to rest and in several cases, this included missing critical sporting events that could further their careers.

He was also aware that despite his advice, athletes whose livelihood depended on their performances would ignore his advice and train while injured. With this in mind, he dedicated years of his life to creating tape that would replace the current surgical tape, whose only function was immobilizing a joint so it could heal properly.

Dr. Kase combined nylon and cotton and applied a powerful adhesive. This gave birth to the Kinesiology tape. He would use this tape to help further the health of his patients. He would also develop a taping method where tape strips would be applied over the skin instead of simply wrapping. The tape became famous when prominent athletes wore it during the 2012 Olympics.

ALL THE WORK IS IN THE PREP

1. Put on tape for at least an hour before exercising or anticipating any dampness. Challenging exercises should be given extra time to encourage better initial K-Tape skin adherence.

2. Remove extra hair from the application area by trimming or shaving.

3. To remove any lotions or oils from the skin, use rubbing alcohol. Give the skin time to dry completely.

4. To prevent the K-Tape from snagging on clothing, round the corners of any cuts you make to the tape.

5. Start by removing the center’s backing paper. Do not touch the tape’s adhesive surface; keep your fingertips on the backing paper.

6. When securing the tape to the skin, be careful not to stretch the first and last two inches of each strip. Stretching the ends might make the K-Tape® prematurely come apart and strain the skin.

7. Apply consistent pressure over the breadth of the strip with your thumb and index finger to produce a uniform stretch. Be careful not to stretch the tape too far. Less is more, always!

8. For improved adhesion, rub vigorously for 10 seconds or more. The heat helps to activate the adhesive, allowing for a longer duration of use.

Removing the tape

Before removing the tape, apply baby oil, soap, or hair conditioner at least five minutes in advance. These solutions will aid in softening the adhesive, improving the experience of removing the tape. Wetting the video and/or removing it in the shower is also beneficial.

Peel the tape from one end to grasp a corner with your fingertips—the direction of your hair growth when lifting (typically, away from the body).

While removing the tape, keep the skin taut. Rolling the tape’s long side across the tape’s long edge with the palm of your hand is another efficient removal technique.
