What can cause math problems?

Talk to your child’s teacher
This is a great first step towards figuring out why your child is having math problems. You can ask the teacher for a list of the skills your child should have learned by the end of the school year.
This can give you the feeling that there isn’t as much to learn as you might initially think.
The teacher can try different strategies to help the child develop math skills and understand math concepts.
Use visualization for math
Turn abstract math on paper into fun object manipulation. For example, in order to teach a child the signs “more or less” use the tale of the raven.
Play math
A child should not be afraid of computing. Ask your child to help you sort the underwear and pairs of upward socks. Or measure out ingredients for cooking or estimate the value of purchases in the store.
- Explain to your child WHY a particular mathematical sign and term is used.

- For example, to explain equations to your child, take a regular mug, write an “x” on the bottom of the mug, and turn it upside down. Close one of the numbers and ask your child what’s under the mug?

Help your child recognize and build on their strengths. Remind you that you are very proud of him and that you love him.

Use a pencil and pen to bring the problems to life and draw a short cartoon about the problem.

This will help you understand that you are not the only family facing these difficulties.
