Despite the fact that the banana tree loves the tropics, with the right care and the creation of optimal conditions, it will also catch on in our parts. Although it does not need much for healthy growth, it minimally tolerates a suitable location, quality and nutritious soil and regular care throughout the cultivation period.

Where did the banana tree come from?

The original home of bananas are subtropical Asian regions. In both China and India, they were even considered one of the holiest fruits and attributed a number of healing effects to them. From there, bananas reached the Middle East and present-day Turkey. During the 16th and 17th centuries, bananas were imported to Latin America, where they became one of the most widespread fruits due to tropical conditions. It is no coincidence that Ecuador, Panama and Cuba are the largest exporters of bananas to Europe.

What makes a banana tree typical?

Winters in the temperate zone are liquidating for the plant sitting outside. Its cultivation is thus recommended either directly in the apartment, or in the case of owning a house in a winter garden or greenhouse.

Smaller types of banana trees are recommended for flats, so-called dwarf. They tend to grow to a height of 1 to 1.5 meters. They fulfill an exclusively decorative function, which is taken care of by large elegant leaves with smooth wavy edges.

Growing in the winter garden

You can also place higher species in the winter garden. They could even give birth to you after a few years. However, there will not be many fruits born, so they will become a decoration of the plant rather than a crop suitable for use.

Which location is best for a banana tree?

Whether you are growing a banana tree in an apartment, in a winter garden or in a greenhouse in the garden, in addition to the higher temperature, you must give it enough light. Since it requires at least 10 to 12 hours of light a day and the intensity of daylight is lower in our autumn and winter, it is necessary to place it under artificial lighting. When choosing a location, look for a place where there is no draft. Humidity is just as important, so avoid rooms with dry air when choosing a location.

How to care for a banana tree?

  • Every banana tree will appreciate the regular watering in a reasonable amount.
  • The soil must not be soaked, do not water again until dry.
  • In an effort to increase the humidity in the room, humidify the air with a spray.
  • Occasionally wipe the leaves of the banana tree with a thin cloth dampened with water.
  • Once every 2 to 3 weeks, apply the organic fertilizer in liquid form.

Practical and aesthetic function?

Adherence to proven planting principles and subsequent proper care will lead to the banana tree fulfilling its ornamental function without any problems. In addition, it will bring you considerable practical benefits. It is known for its ability to clean the air from dust or other impurities. This makes it a suitable plant for households where allergy sufferers and people with chronic respiratory problems live.

Interesting at the end…

Bananas have gained a place in architecture in the past. In India, there are still pagodas whose roofs are decorated with a look designed according to the shape of bananas.
