You have probably been in a similar position to me and wondered how to find yourself again after depression. I was in that desperate situation too many years ago. It was not pretty. If you have ever been depressed, you know how it feels. My life was never the same for seven miserable years after I had “caught my depression.”
You feel lost, hopeless, confused, and like nothing is going right or wrong. You may even believe that you are destined for a short life of misery and pain. Had those thoughts, too, a million times over. Searched for some sign of hope. I believed that I would be successful one day finding my way out of my depression, but nothing happened. I tried to run back to the past, but I got more profound in the hole each time I did.
It became a pattern. Each time I thought I would try something new, and I failed. Began to believe that there was no way out, and I became discouraged. I began to ask myself why I was not having any luck with anything that I tried. I knew that I needed to change some things in my life, so I set about making some changes.
My first real plan was to attend a support group meeting for depressed people. I joined a few different ones to locate one that would be open to me. I still attend to this day. Through this support group, I learned new things about myself, my depression, and what might be causing it. In addition, I began to see past my problems and realize that I had nothing to worry about.
Things that You Need to Understand
There is something that you need to understand. When you become discouraged and give up on reaching your goal, you become negative. Once you become negative, anything you do will only produce more of the same feelings of discouragement and defeat.
During this period, I was very active. Thought that if I kept going, I would be happy. Was very eager to reach my goal and soon found that I wasn’t. I began to feel like I wanted to give up. How to find yourself again after depression is when you become active again and stop being passive.
If you have lost the will to continue your quest to become successful or even happy, then it is time to move on. Finding yourself again after the depression has become knowing that you can’t control your feelings any longer. You need to come to terms with that fact. I’m not trying to make you feel bad. If you have reached a point where you are ready to give up, I congratulate you for taking steps to become successful.
How to find yourself again after depression
Begins with finding a new purpose in life. A new hobby or volunteer work is a great way to accomplish this. You want to enjoy what you are doing. Make sure that your new hobby or volunteer work is something that you enjoy.
Your job or family life may be interfering with this, but you still must push forward. It’s impossible to do anything while you are in depression. You have to learn how to overcome depression and move on. If you feel that this is too much for you to handle, seek help to overcome depression.
Getting your mind off of depression is the most challenging part. But once you can do this, you will have moved on. Remembering that you have overcome depression before and that you can do it again is very empowering. This will help you continue to strive for success in your career and your life in general. Don’t give up, and don’t be discouraged.
If you feel as if this can’t be done alone, then enlist the help of friends or family members. Talk to them about what it was like for you when you were depressed. They may be able to provide you with a bit of extra push during this challenging time.
