CPU cooling is one of the most important components in a personal computer system. If you’re reading this, then you’re probably looking to buy one and I’m glad that we could help you with that. There are plenty of things to consider here and it might become confusing to pick out the right one for your needs. No worries, we’re here to help you.

In this guide, we’ll discuss the factors that you need to consider when choosing a CPU cooler and even suggest some of the best models on the market for various needs and budgets. We will also recommend you our top pick which we think is ideal for each category.

You should check your current unit to see if it already comes with a stock cooler as most modern CPUs come with one. CPU Coolers If you want to replace the existing unit, then you might have different needs and requirements from choosing a new one. Here are some of the things that we need to consider:

Do I Really Need a New CPU Cooler?

If your current cooling system is making too much noise or is not really effective in keeping your CPU cool, then it’s time to get the new one. As with other personal computer components, you need to replace them after some time every now and then.

CPU cooler (also called heatsink/cooler) has an important job of transferring the heat generated by the CPU to the air outside the case via a fan. CPU Coolers If you think that your PC is running sluggish or doing fine but it’s way too loud, then perhaps it’s time for you to get a new CPU cooler.

i) CPU Cooler Requirements: Most modern desktop CPUs come with stock coolers and usually they are enough to keep them cool and stable even when overclocked a little bit. However, if you want to get more from your CPU and you’re planning to overclock, then it’s time for you to consider getting a new one. On the other hand, you might need to get a new cooler either because of compatibility issues or upgrade purposes.

ii) Compatibility: Compatibility always comes first so take note of your CPU model number before buying a new cooling system. You don’t want to get something that won’t fit in the place where you’re going to put it, right? Most modern CPUs come with stock coolers while some high-end models require bigger coolers that are usually not included in stock systems.

iii) Upgrade or Replacement: Upgrading takes place when you want to replace the stock cooler because of compatibility issues. This usually happens if you are planning to install a new CPU model but your current cooling system is not compatible with it. Replacement means that you’re just replacing the old with the new one, particularly if your current unit is already broken.

Types of CPU Coolers:

Stock coolers  – these are the ones that come with the CPU Coolers you’re buying and they usually suck. If your current unit is already making noises and it is not really effective in keeping your system stable, then it’s time for you to get a better one. Most stock cooler models cannot be replaced with aftermarket cooler models because of mounting issues so if you want to get more from your system, then it’s time for you to consider getting an upgrade.

Aftermarket coolers  – these are the ones that you can replace your stock model with or use in parallel (in separate systems) when needed. These are great accessories for your desktop and they will help you get more from your CPU than ever before. There are plenty of models to choose from so we’ll discuss them one by one below.
