How e-liquid?

They told me crazy when I decided to mix chocolate and orange to produce a Terry e-liquid.

Unfortunately, they were right.

Whether it was the balance of flavors or the specific orange I used, the combination was more like eating an orange with the chocolate aftertaste still in your mouth than delicately infused chocolate with orange. I tried again, recomposing the orange and bumping the chocolate, but it still didn’t hit the mark.

Most people who mix e-juice have experiences similar to this. Getting creative with your flavor combinations and seeing what you can find is part of the fun, but sometimes you just want something flavorful to vape. If you’re in a hurry for time, or don’t want the inevitable trial and error of the mixing process, there is a great solution in the form of flavor concentrates.

What are the Concentrate flavors?

Flavor concentrates essentially give you the flavor blends of your favorite e-juices without PG, VG, and nicotine to make it a complete e-juice (although they are usually diluted in PG). The idea is that instead of combining specific flavors to produce the right combination or replicate the taste of your favorite e-juice, you just need to buy the combination of ready-to-use and perfectly balanced flavors to add. directly to your mixes.

The good news for EU-based vapers is that the lack of nicotine means the concentrates are not subject to the bottle size restrictions imposed by the TPD. You can pick them up in a variety of sizes, but most of the time you’ll end up with 30ml of concentrate.

.You need to invest in mixing equipment early on

Flavor concentrates are designed for vaping

One of the great advantages of using flavor concentrates rather than flavors from elsewhere is that they are explicitly designed for vaporization.

While most household blenders use food flavors that are reused for vaping, the companies that make these concentrates do so with the knowledge that people will be vaping them.

Juan Lopez-Belmonte, Head of Product Management at Cuts Ice which makes T-Juice Concentrates (which include the vivid elements of their popular Red Astare 10ml juice), points out that there is a huge difference between quality ingredients. food and what Cuts Ice calls Vape Quality Ingredients. Simply put, food grade testing doesn’t go nearly far enough when dealing with ingredients for inhalation.

All Cuts Ice (and Halo Vapor Co) E-liquids, including short refills and concentrates, go through a two-step process to ensure the e-liquid is as high as possible.

In the first step, there is a screening for any ingredients that may have carcinogenic, mutagenic or genotoxic properties, reproductive toxicity and respiratory sensitization. Indeed, anything that science tells us is likely to be harmful or cause an allergic reaction.

In the second step, which goes far beyond current regulatory requirements (even for the 10ml e-liquid), toxicologists perform a full set of all remaining ingredients to ensure that no undue chemicals are delivered, by inhalation, to users.

Not all companies go this far in product management, and it should be noted that concentrates, although covered by general product safety regulations, are not covered by the Product Directive. tobacco. This reiterates the importance of buying from reputable companies that do the most for product safety.

Warning: Do not vape flavor concentrates without mixing

Before we discuss what you do with flavor concentrates, it’s important to point out what you don’t. Vaping aromatic concentrates directly is a bad idea: always mix concentrates with PG and VG before vaping.

Of course, it is not really dangerous to directly vape the flavor concentrates, just a bad idea because it will taste coarse. Also, if you vape concentrates, you risk clogging your wick and killing your coil.

How to use flavor concentrates

Using flavor concentrates is easy as long as you are comfortable with mixing e-liquid. They’re designed to simplify part of the process, so you’ll still need to be able to do the rest if you’re using flavor concentrates. For this reason, it’s only really recommended if you’ve been vaping for a while and understand what you’re doing.

If you already know how to mix, it’s really easy: make your e-juice as usual, but when you come to add the flavors, just use the flavor concentrate instead of your normal blend of individual flavors.

If you don’t know how to mix it will be a bit more difficult, but you can still get started quite easily. You will need one bottle of PG, one of VG, and a nicotine “base” (that is, strong, concentrated nicotine) in addition to syringes with flat-tipped needles and large caliber and (possibly) a few precise scales. On top of that, you should get bottles for your completed mixes, with drip tips and child-resistant caps.

The biggest challenge in mixing for the first time is getting the right level of nicotine and PG / VG ratio for your intended blend. Fortunately, calculators like Steam-Engine’s Mixing Calculator are perfect tools for this job. Indicate the size of the bottle you want to make, the details of your nicotine base (including strength and if it is PG or VG based), and your target nicotine concentration and PG / VG ratio. There’s also a place where you can add whatever percentage of flavor you want into the mix (more on this later). The “Recipe” section on the right will then display the amount of each ingredient you need to add.

The key thing to remember is that accuracy is important. While it’s unlikely to matter that much if you’re a bit outside, you should take care to measure everything as accurately as possible. This is why accurate scales are really useful, but if you don’t have one, use the markings on the side of your syringe and remember to keep it upright while you measure. Other than that, just add the ingredients to an empty bottle, add the cap, give it a strong shake to mix and then you are good to go.

How Much Concentrate Should I Add?

The best amount of concentrate for a given mixture is not always easy to determine. In general, companies that sell concentrates will recommend the strength of the blend, with 15-18% recommended for concentrates sold here at E-Cigarette Direct.

Generally, however, 5% is considered a low amount of flavor, 10% is a medium amount, and 15% is a high amount. In my experience (and taste), 5% and 10% are both too low, so 15-18% is a good recommendation, but you can keep that in mind and experiment to see what happens. works for you.

Concentrates make mixing easier

Making your own e-liquid is always pretty straightforward, but flavor concentrates take the guesswork out of flavor creation and make it easy to produce the right mixes every time. So if you’ve been interested in DIY, but always felt like it might be too difficult, concentrates are a great tool for a new blender. Try it out and start saving money!
