How can Students Get Rid of Phone Addiction while Studying

Must Read

The biggest cause for concern among students who are ready to give their national exams (be it O levels or A levels) is their lack of productivity. JC tutors would often advise their anxious A level exam-going students to inculcate self-discipline and maintain focus during study sessions.

Home tuition is admittedly one of the best ways to supplement school work as it is a fixed time in a day where students have to strap themselves down without any excuses. There are no opportunities for distraction as a tutor will be there during the session.

With the growing concern for students’ lack of focus in studies, parents are seeking out tuition agencies to hire a good home tutor who can guide them well. All this lack of focus and lack of productivity has to be corrected by students themselves and though many want to make a change in their study habits, they aren’t sure of where to start.

So, here are some ways students can get rid of phone addition during study sessions!

REALISE THE IMPORTANCE

In order to make a change in your life, you need to first ask yourself why you want to do it in the first place. Setting your mind in the right place and reminding yourself of the purpose of the change you are going to make is the first step.

You need to understand that being focused during a study session without any distractions would enable you to be very productive and instead of reading a chapter for 3 hours, you’ll probably be done with it in an hour or so.

As you save yourself more time, you will have the opportunity to pursue your hobbies and take longer breaks as well. It all boils down to how productive you are; so, commit to these changes in your mind to begin with.

TURN IT OFF, KEEP IT AWAY

It may seem like a tough thing to do, and initially when you turn your phone off, it would seem odd but once you get into the groove of studying, you’ll soon forget that your phone even exists.

The sound of notifications or the vibration of the phone upon a call would be tempting for us to pick up and see what is going on and there goes productivity out the window! If you do not give yourself the opportunity to even think about your phone, you will have a more productive study session void of distractions.

Moreover, keeping your phone far away from you will require you to take the extra amount of effort to overcome the friction of getting up from the chair and walking over to the phone to pick it up so maintaining a good distance away from your phone is also an important strategy.

TEMPORARY ESCAPE

If you are a student who is running the last lap in preparation of national exams, you can make a temporary escape from social media for the time being. The idea is to not delete your Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook account, it is just uninstalling the app for the time being.

No matter how much you resist yourself, you may give in to the temptation and you would procrastinate and waste your time unnecessarily. The guilt that comes after wasting a large amount of time will pull you down even further as you feel bad about yourself and this will become a vicious cycle.

So, it will be good if you could escape from your social media platforms temporarily and make the best out of the time available for you.

GIVE YOURSELF REWARDS

Think about what else would be rewarding for you other than your time spent on social media or scrolling through messages in your phone.

This can include things like,

  • Making yourself a cup of coffee/tea/or any other beverage
  • Making yourself some food
  • Doing some baking
  • Reading your favourite story book
  • Watching an episode of a show
  • Engaging in your hobby (ex.drawing)

It could be anything. When you break down your long study sessions into shorter ones and keep rewards at every checkpoint, you would find yourself more productive and you wouldn’t be unnecessarily distracted by your phone.

When you find alternative reward systems which do not involve your phone, there would be less reasons for you to even think about your phone, let alone pick up and use it.

IN CONCLUSION

It would seem easier said than done and all this requires students to be a little self-disciplined and determined in order to persist with consistency. If at all there are difficulties in being productive, students can always seek help from their parents and tuition teachers to think about more ways to solve the problem.
