Eggplant is not one of the most popular crops by chance. He gained a stable place in the gardens for several reasons. In addition to being widely used in the kitchen, many gardeners reach for it due to the simple way of growing. It can be handled in a few steps.

Growing eggplant can be compared to peppers or tomatoes. Even in this case, it is a one-year-old annual, which needs only the right location and a little basic care for a rich harvest. The result will be tasty and healthy fruits with a relatively low caloric value, which we will not only enjoy. By consuming them, we also give the body a supply of certain vitamins and minerals.

Where did eggplant come from and why is it grown?

  • The original home of eggplant is the area of ​​today’s India.
  • It reached the old continent during the 12th to 13th centuries.
  • In Europe, it was first grown in Spain and France.
  • It was not cultivated in Central Europe until the 18th century.
  • Even then, many ways of using eggplant in the kitchen were known.
  • In addition to its wide use in the kitchen, it also contains many medicinal substances.
  • It is especially known for fiber, which makes it recommended for weight loss.
  • Its cultivation is not demanding on time, money or conditions.

Eggplant is a varied type of vegetable that grows to a height of 1.5 m. That is why the best place to grow is an open space in the garden.

Flower beds with oval fruits can also grow in our greenhouse. It can maintain a higher temperature even in colder periods, which wishes the fruits to ripen faster.

At home in a flowerpot

Eggplant growing is also possible indoors at home. In that case, however, it will not be a plentiful harvest. On the windowsill in the room, previously bred varieties with small growth are grown.

10 steps to master the cultivation of eggplant

1. Choosing a suitable place

At the beginning of the process of growing eggplant is the choice of location. As a southern thermophilic crop, you will appreciate the most brightly lit habitat. When choosing a location, it also weighs down how the land was previously used. We should avoid planting in places where there were tomatoes or potatoes. It is advisable to plant where early vegetables such as salad or radish grew.

2. Autumn soil preparation

Despite the fact that the eggplant is planted in the spring, the soil in which we will plant it can be prepared during the autumn. As part of this step, we will make sure that we clean the area for growing eggplant from leaves, weeds and remnants of vegetables that were grown there before. Subsequently, we fertilize the soil with, for example, manure, which provides the soil with the necessary nutrients.

3. Pre-cultivation of seedlings

Several gardeners plant eggplant from pre-prepared mash. These are being prepared in January or February. They are planted in crucibles or boxes in the form of sprouted seeds, or we use prepared seeds. After a few weeks, small seedlings will grow from it, which can be transplanted into the garden in May.

4. Spring soil preparation

At a time when we are growing seedlings, we can start spring preparation of the soil. In particular, it requires clay treatment after winter. We repeatedly dig the soil, which we should do at least 2 weeks before planting the seedlings. During these days we do not forget to clean the soil from weeds.

5. Marking of planting

We will finish the soil preparation before planting by marking the positions where the seedlings will be placed. When deploying them, we should keep distances that reach about 30 centimeters when growing in rows and about 50 centimeters when growing in tendons. We can then insert the mallets into the given places, or mark them in any other visible way.

6. Planting seedlings

After preparing the soil, the planting itself comes into play. We will dig holes in the marked places, which we will pour copiously. Eggplant is always recommended to be planted in soaked soil. We then insert individual segments into these wells and then cover them with accumulated clay.

7. Watering eggplant

Eggplant suffers from enough moisture, so we have to water often and at regular intervals. This is true throughout the growing season until the final days when the fruits ripen. Drought is liquidating for the flowers and the fruits themselves, and when there is a lack of moisture, they begin to decline.

8. Eggplant fertilization

In addition to enough moisture, eggplant also suffers from enough fertilizer. This can be applied immediately after planting, while we continue to fertilize at frequent intervals during the growing season. It is recommended to bet on liquid fertilizers, the application of which gets as much nutrients into the soil as possible.

9. Regulation of fruits

If eggplant bears above average, we can regulate the fruit. In practice, this means that a woman leaves a maximum of 6 to 8 fruits per plant. This will create space for them to mature to the largest possible dimensions. At the same time, they will not be a burden on the plant, thus preventing it from breaking.

10. Fruit collection

After successful cultivation comes the final step. This is the harvest of fruit, which takes place about a month after flowering. This can happen at any time from July until late autumn, depending on the growth rate. The aid for the timing of the collection is the purple color and the soft flesh.

After harvesting, we have several options for processing the eggplant. However, pay attention to the way we include it in the menu. Due to the solanine content, eggplant must not be eaten raw. However, during heat treatment, it will completely decompose and the tasty fruit will be a healthy nutritional supplement.
