강남안마 is a type of Thai massage that originated in Korea and Japan. The exact techniques used in Gangnam massage are often disputed, but most practitioners will tell you that it combines the best of both traditional and advanced Japanese massage techniques, as well as the Swedish massage. A typical Gangnam massage combines effleurage, petrissage and suction to help focus pressure and penetrate deeply through the body. Effleurage is also sometimes referred to as “the hammering” of the muscles, while petrissage is described as “the rolling and rubbing motion.” Basically, Gangnam massage helps to restore a patient’s strength and flexibility after an injury or surgery, giving them a “fresh feeling” in the affected areas. Aromatherapy massage, which includes massage techniques such as Swedish massage, is often included in a Gangnam session to further encourage relaxation and a feeling of well being.
If you’d rather skip the therapist, that’s fine too! I’ve had some wonderful (and somewhat painful) massages at a local spa just down the street from Gangnam. They’re called Geonma 1 Insyap, and they’re located at 10 Silla Road, Gangnam. The owners, Eunkyung Joo-yeong and Min-Seok Park, have been doing this massage therapy for about 10 years. There’s an actual sauna at the back of the building that has proven very popular among tourists and locals.
Both of these spas offer a variety of different types of treatments, including shiatsu, Swedish massage, reflexology and a variety of different types of bodywork. Of all the bodywork they offer though, foot massage is by far their most popular. I can’t speak to their foot massagers enough – they’re like walking on clouds!
If you visit this particular massage shop, you’ll notice there are a few tables in the room, with chairs placed all around them. In the back of the room, you’ll find the only restroom facility there. Of course, you won’t be allowed to step into this room without their permission, and that’s where the real magic happens! A couple of tables will line the walls, while over on one side a row of chairs will have been positioned facing the other wall. As you step into the room, you’re welcomed with a very soothing and deep foot massage.
The best bit? You won’t have to pay anything when you get a full body or foot massage! As if that wasn’t enough, there are also a couple of small saunas at the back of the store, where visitors can cool themselves off with steam. The prices for both services are very reasonable, and nationwide information can be easily obtained over the phone.
After all of these wonderful experiences, what is left to do? Well, before we wrap up, I want to tell you that Gangnam Massage is located only about 30 minutes from Seoul, the capital of South Korea. If you happen to be in the area, you can always hop on a train, a bus, or even rent a car to get around. Of course, you can always stay in the comfort of your own home, but if you’d prefer to be out in the open, I highly recommend this spa! There is nothing better in the world than getting a relaxing massage in a beautiful place like Seoul.
