Starting any food business in India necessitates FSSAI registration, except for petty food manufacturers such as hawkers, temporary stallholders, or food distributed in religious and social gatherings, unless a caterer.

FSSAI licenses are classified into three types. According to the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, all of the following businesses must register for an FSSAI license online:-

State license – It must be obtained by small and medium-sized food manufacturers such as dairy units, meat processing units, relabelled and repackers; storage units such as cold/refrigerated units; transporters with 100 vehicles or a turnover of up to 30 crores; retailers, marketers, distributors, suppliers, and caterers with a turnover of up to 20 crores; 3-star hotels, restaurants with a turnover of up to 20 crores; Dhabas with a turnover of up to 20 crores; This license is issued by the State Government to units that only operate in one state. The duration of this license is between 1 to 5 years.

FSSAI Central License – This is required for importers, 100 percent export-oriented units, large food manufacturers, and operators in Central Government agencies, airports, and seaports, among other things. This license is issued by the Central Government. It is also to be obtained by companies with operations in more than one state and an annual turnover of more than 20 crores. The license is valid for one to five years.

FSSAI Basic registration is required for small food manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailers, wholesalers, marketers, distributors, and suppliers, among others. This is mostly required by organizations with annual revenues of less than 12 lakh. The license is valid for one to five years.

Except for Nagaland, almost all states accept online applications for FSSAI licenses. The following documents must be submitted in order to apply for an FSSAI license:

  • List of directors/partners/promoters, including full address and contact information
  • Photo ID of the food business’s sponsors or directors – Aadhaar card, Pan Card, and passport size photos
  • Utility bills or a rental agreement, as well as a no-objection certificate from the owner, serve as proof of address.
  • The Partnership Deed or Certificate of Incorporation, as well as the Articles of Association and the Memorandum of Association, are all required documents.
  • A comprehensive list of all food products manufactured, processed, or stored by the company.
  • The Food safety management system plans, as well as the unit layout with dimensions.
  • Name and list of installed equipment and machinery, as well as horsepower.
  • A recognized/public health laboratory’s analysis report on the water to be used as an ingredient
  • Form B has been signed and completed by the directors/promoters/partners or authorized signatory.
  • Import Export Code for a central license, particularly for businesses intending to import or export food items
  • A chartered accountant’s declaration is required for units with a turnover of more than 18 crores.

  • Creating inspection details – Anyone who has filed an application for FSSAI Registration should check in with the government department to see if there has been an update. The government may respond with a request for changes. If you do not respond within 15 days of submitting your application, it will be rejected.
  • Registration certificate – The Department may accept or reject any application for FSSAI registration within seven days of the date of filing, and the applicant must be notified in writing. After proper verification of the Form, if the Authority is satisfied, he/she will issue a 14-digit FSSAI registration, which will be communicated to you.
