A tyre puncture in the middle of the road is one of the nastiest things that you can get while you drive. Tyres are otherwise said to be the most sturdy parts of the vehicle. They are made after a lot of research and testing. That’s because the roads are quite harsh for them. There are potholes, patches and kerbs on the roads. If that’s not enough, there can be nails and pieces of glass shards scattered on the roads.

Though your tyres do put up a good fight on the roads and ensure that you get a comfortable drive, however, there are times when they succumb to the pressure. Yes. They get punctured and that’s where the trouble starts. These punctures can happen anywhere on the roads with no scope for help whatsoever.

What’s the law behind puncture repair?

Tyre repair isn’t as easy as it sounds. It requires a lot of skill and precision. The UK government has set some rules for puncture repair and it ensures that they are followed stringently. It’s called the British Standard way of puncture repair. It’s called the BS AU 159. It says that while repairing the Goodyear tyres Loughborough, the procedure should make use of both repair patch and plug. You need to see that it’s done by some qualified technician and carried out the way it is laid out.

Are all punctures repairable?

Well, no. Not all punctures are repairable. A lot depends on the location of the puncture and the condition of the tyre. A puncture can be repaired if –

·      If the puncture is situated in the three-quarters of the central part of the tyre, then it can be repaired.

·      The minimum tread limit of the tyre should be more than 1.6 mm.

·      The sidewall of the tyre is intact and there’s no damage to the structural integrity of the tyre.

·      The tyre doesn’t seem to be deteriorating.

·      There’s no other puncture close to this puncture.

Pre-puncture sealants – What are they?

These sealants are inserted into the valve of the tyre as a precautionary measure. They prevent air loss. That means you can drive without any interruption or issue in the tyre. The only problem is you don’t get to know on time when the puncture occurs.

Do post-puncture sealants work?

These sealants are used after a puncture has occurred in the tyre. Like the former, this is also infused through the route of the valve and then the tyre is inflated again using a gas cylinder. This forms a layer inside the tyre that helps in protecting it. However, if you’re planning to use a sealant, make sure you use it immediately when the puncture occurs. Sealants are never a permanent solution. They should only be used when it’s extremely urgent. Otherwise, get your tyre repaired the way it should be.

Can run-flat tyres be repaired?

Run-flat tyres allow you to run for some more miles even after getting a puncture. However, the miles and speed at which they should run in case of a puncture, are clearly stated by the manufacturer. Ideally, it’s almost impossible to determine the speed and the circumstances in which the tyre was run on the road by the mechanic.

Our conclusion

Safety should be the top-most priority when it comes to repairing punctures. Get a puncture repaired only if it’s possible. Make sure, it’s always repaired the way it is mentioned in the law.
