Donut is a very popular dessert in the Balkans and the Middle East. This is a yeast dough fried in hot oil with a spherical shape. On top they are garnished with ingredients of our choice and their taste is unique. Let’s see in more detail what the favorite donuts contain.

Nutritional value

Donuts are one of the most delicious but at the same time one of the most fattening sweets with high caloric value. This is mainly due to a large amount of oil we use for frying. Then, the caloric load increases according to the materials we will choose to accompany them.

In general, we can say that 100 grams of plain donuts contain:

  • 330 calories
  • 4 gr. total fat of which
  • 2 gr. saturated fat
  • 68 gr. carbohydrates
  • 2 gr. Dietary fiber
  • 30 gr. sugars
  • 6 gr. protein

So one donut (30 g) contains about 70-90 calories! We must be very careful in the quantities and frequency we consume them if we want to keep our weight constant.

How to make homemade donuts

Basic recipe for donuts:

Materials:

  • 500 gr. flour
  • 500 gr. lukewarm water
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 20 gr. fresh yeast
  • Oil for frying

Implementation:

  1. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in half the lukewarm water, stirring with a fork.
  2. Put the flour and the dissolved yeast in a bowl and mix, adding the rest of the warm water, until it becomes a thick porridge. Cover the bowl with a towel and leave in a warm environment until the dough triples in volume.
  3. Heat plenty of oil in a medium saucepan. Mix the porridge and with two spoons make donuts and throw them in the hot oil (that is, with one spoon we take some of the porridge and with the other, we push it to fall into the oil).
  4. Fry the donuts little by little, stirring them with a slotted spoon until they turn brown on all sides. Remove them with a ladle and leave them on absorbent paper towels to drain.
  5. We serve them with the ingredients of our choice.

With what can we accompany them?

Of course, all the pleasure of donuts is hidden in the combination that we will do for the garnish. We can choose between the following materials:

  • Honey
    • Cinnamon
    • Nuts
    • Chocolate
    • White chocolate
    • Ice cream
    • Cream
    • Jam
    • Peanut butter
    • Pralines of our liking
    • Powdered sugar
    • Sesame
    • Biscuit
    • Milky candy

Of course there is also the possibility to make savory donuts. We can very simply add to our basic recipe spices and dry herbs of our choice such as oregano, pepper, thyme, paprika and more. The savory donuts can be accompanied with:

    • Slice
    • Tomato sauce
    • Petimezi sauce
    • Cheesecake

For greater enjoyment, if you are tired of their classic version, there is also the alternative of making stuffed donuts, either savory or sweet. Fill them with:

    • Pralines
    • Chocolate
    • Jam
    • Fruit
