The International Standards Organization (ISO) is an international agency founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1947. It aims at publishing international standards and ensuring the high quality and healthy use of goods offered to the public. There are 161 countries as of April 2018, with each Member State having a government-regulated body that conducts similar national tasks. we have the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for India.
What is the BIS Certification and what is the purpose?
BIS is a national agency for the maintenance of product quality, protection, and reliability in India. To conduct preliminary surveillance and test samples of goods, BIS has established eight central, four regional and three branch laboratories in its country. The government, therefore, encourages BIS certification for the following purposes: to guarantee public health; to ensure quality; to protect the customer from dangerous products; to promote consumer trust.
Which products are listed as mandatory BIS products in India?

Standard procedure –
The applicant shall apply to the approved officer under the jurisprudence of the manufacturing unit. BIS officials conduct a preliminary factory assessment after the application is registered. The BIS license should be expected in this procedure within 4-6 months after the application has been registered.
Simple procedure
This simplified method was implemented to speed up the licensing process. The BIS license is required to be issued by this process within 30 days after the presentation of the application for the BIS certificate for import in India. The simplified procedure applies for the All India First license cases and all products except those products such as cylinder, valve, cement, etc. where a joint inspection or approval by another statutory authority is required; Products for which a BIS permit was issued based on factory testing; (PNMW).
Eco Mark Scheme:
BIS offers a license under an ECO Mark Scheme for environmentally friendly goods. Environmental goods falling under that group should also comply with the basic Indian Quality requirement: Following a special system – the ECO Mark Scheme, BIS licenses environmentally friendly goods. Environmental goods covered by this category should also adhere to the basic Indian Standard criteria.
Certification Scheme Foreign Manufacturers – The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) launched in 2000 and has since been continuing the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS). This system requires applicants from abroad/foreign suppliers to use the default mark on their goods. A BIS license is obtained in around 6 months under this method. What are the measures for domestic manufacturers in the normal procedure?

The License to use the Standard Mark on a product is given after the BIS has thoroughly ensured the product is following the applicable Indian Standards and has the capacity of keeping on to the standards continuously. The initial validity period of the BIS license is one year and can be extended for a further period of one/two years, subject to satisfactory service. What are the CRS and its procedure?
The Minister of Electrical and Information Technology (MeitY) released a list of 15 electronics product categories on 3 October 2012 with “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Constituted Registration Requirement) Order 2012.” Per the order, no one may manufacture or store the notified products, which do not meet Indian standards for sale or import or sale or distribution.
Therefore, BIS Registration of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) must be requested by manufacturers without fail by the specified process. The Indian Standards Bureau (BIS) then registers the producer under its system of registration. Registered manufacturers may then announce that their product conforms to the Indian regulations. Registered manufacturers may then claim that their goods comply with the Indian standards or use the Bureau-notified standard label.
Immediately before Chapter IVA of BIS Rules 1987, a compulsory registration regime shall apply. Additional orders from MeitY will later add further categories. As of 1 April 2018, 50 products are listed as compulsory registration products.
