All You Should Know About Roof Ventilation System

Must Read

Ventilation of the roof is directly related to the longevity and well-being of your house. So, a good and well-crafted ventilation system removes the overheating from the attic and also maintains the temperature of the internal area of the structure. Ultimately keeping your house safe from the impacts of harsh weather conditions.

The system that makes the ventilation possible is nothing but the intake and exhaust roof vents for your home. Typically and ideally, these vents are placed at different places throughout the roof to maintain balance.

This article explains all you need to know about roof ventilation and why it is required.

What Is Roof Ventilation?

Roof ventilation is a system that makes the airflow through the attic. As the roof vents allow the air to escape the system preventing the interior from being overheated or overcooked. When the system is not developed, it leads to severe damages to the house and may cause serious health risks to the residents as well.

In short, these roof vents ventilate the house and act as an escaping point for the trapped hot air and moisture from inside of the house.

What Does Roof Ventilation Do?

Maintaining the roof temperature in different seasons is essential for the long-term health of your roof and house. Such as, in winter, if parts of the roof are overly frozen and experience uneven thawing it can lead to severe structural damage to your sweet house. Similarly, in summer the unevenly thawed roof can lead to energy loss. This means you will not only experience roof and structural damage but also high energy bills.

A well-maintained and designed roof ventilation system with equal spacing between the vents placed in optimum amount can save all this havoc and make your roof last longer. A roof with a huge insulation system keeps the roof and house sheathing cold.

Adverse Impacts Of Improper Roof Ventilation

The two most important impacts of improper ventilation systems include the changes in temperature and moisture in the house.

The trapped hot air in the house can increase the overall temperature of the house. As all of us know the hot air rises up means the hot air from the inside will move up to the attic. If the temperature of the attic is not equal to the outer temperature it will cause structural problems and raise the temperature of the inside.

The proper ventilation system allows the hot air to escape from the attic hence maintaining its temperature and structure. If the ventilation is poor, it will result in hot inside and significant roof damage due to heating pressure.

Moisture in the air of the house can attract mold and mildew, especially in the rainy season. This mildew and mold can pose severe dangers to the infrastructure and health of the inhabitants.

If the house lacks a proper ventilation system it will lead to the formation of mildew and mold causing the air to moisten laden making it an awful environment to live in.

Things To Keep In Mind About A Ventilation System

  • The roof vents should be placed in the right ratio as to the size of the roof.
  • Vents should be scattered all over the roof with proper distancing. This will ensure a balanced inflow and outflow of the air.
  • Choose the correct type of vent. Vents come in various types such as ridge vents, static vents, and gable vents. Each type serves different purposes. So, it is better to consult an expert roofer about the type of vent you need.
  • Try to keep the ventilation and insulation system synchronized. As too much escape of hot air can also lead to temperature disbalance of the house, requiring more expenditure to warm it.
  • When installed, the roof ventilation system should be checked every few months. This requires the inspection and repair of the damaged parts, tiles, and changing the cracked glasses.
  • Also cleaning of the debris and leaves trapped to the outer of the vents due to winds. This increases the efficiency and life span of the vents.
