The use of alternative building materials in the implementation of family houses has also proved successful in our region. The number of builders who are interested in building buildings using clay and straw is growing rapidly and one of them maybe you in time… Do you know how to build a house out of clay and straw?
Although the construction of houses from clay and straw is generally considered to be easier and faster than in the case of brick houses, it is necessary to think about a few important steps before its implementation. It depends on them whether the house will be built with quality, what will be its ability to “save” and whether all the requirements associated with its construction will be met.
How to build a house out of clay and straw?
Building permit equipment
You cannot avoid the condition of obtaining a building permit even when building a house from alternative materials. However, the process of equipping it is no different than for masonry constructions, so just visit the relevant building authority, pay the correct fees and wait for the release.
Experts recommend buying material that is certified. In the case of clay, you can still rely on the self-help of a mixture of several types of soil containing at least 10% clay, but the preparation of your own straw bales is not recommended unless you have the required knowledge of this process.
The issue of material plays an important role not only in the construction itself, but also in its storage before and during implementation. It is this step that will affect the overall ability of the material to insulate the building and thus influence the amount of costs.
How to store materials?
It is recommended to store the clay mixture indoors, where it is not endangered by moisture. Basements or garages, in which a relatively higher temperature is maintained, are also ideal.
Prepared straw bales should not be in areas with higher humidity, which could lead to rapid deterioration.
What not to forget before building a house out of clay and straw?
Purchase of straw bales
When it comes to straw bales, you must not forget to monitor its quality when buying. This can be evaluated according to the color, which should be in a golden shade. If the straw in the bales is darker, it is usually a damp and probably degraded material.
Before starting the implementation, also pay attention to the design of the usable area. This is because straw bales take up more space than bricks, so when designing you have to take into account a certain cutting of dimensions, possibly up to 20 to 30 cm per m2.
The straw house should have several partitions, the presence of which will also be used for the installation of wiring. It is to them that water and gas connections should be built in, which is not recommended to be placed directly in straw structures. In the case of electrical wiring, it is suitable to use point fixation on straw using a reinforcing mixture of gypsum and clay.
While fans of these homes highlight their benefits, enemies point out the potential risks of living in them. It is important that they become a more economical and ecological alternative compared to ordinary houses, which has no worse comfort. However, this also depends on whether all the required steps leading to quality construction are followed before implementation, with everything that goes with it.
