Did you know that there are more than 57 million freelancers in the United States alone? As the years pass, more and more people are breaking away from the traditional nine to five.

Freelancing comes with a wide variety of benefits, and when you have a talent for writing, what better freelance position than an online writer?

That said, it’s crucial to learn how to write for an online audience, regardless of whether you have your own site or write for other blogs. Every medium has its own set of rules, and online writing is no exception.

For a few great tips that every online writer can use, just keep reading!

1. Utilize Headlines

When you’re writing about something you feel passionate about, it’s easy to assume that everyone else will be as enthusiastic as you. The truth, however, is that the majority of online readers skim articles, they don’t read word by word.

To make your articles useful to both skimmers and thorough readers, your headlines should act as a guide through your post. In doing so, those disinterested in reading the whole thing can easily find what they’re looking for.

2. Keep It Simple

Writing a book is far different than writing online, and thus calls for a different style of writing. When you’re writing a book, you’re free to make your sentences and paragraphs as long as you want.

As a blog writer, on the other hand, it’s important to keep both sentences and paragraphs short and succinct. Clicking an article and being met with a giant wall of text is a great way to turn off online readers.

3. Use Common Words

While your vocabulary is no doubt impressive and expansive, you should do your best to use simple words in your online work. There’s nothing wrong with throwing in a vocabulary word now and then, but too many will annoy the average reader.

Similarly, avoid using jargon and technical words whenever possible. Remember, you might be an expert on the subject you’re writing about, but your audience members aren’t.

4. Review and Revise

One of the best pieces of writer advice we can give you is to be in constant search for improvement. And one of the most effective means of doing so is to review and revise everything you write.

Never allow yourself to be satisfied with a first draft. Write your article, the walk away for an hour or two. Come back with fresh eyes and review your piece, making any necessary adjustments and corrections.

5. Add Links

Sometimes, it can be difficult to flesh out an idea or describe a complex concept without overwhelming your readers. When this situation arises, rather than making your article absurdly long, give your readers links to additional resources on the topic.

We get it. You’re trying to figure out how to make money writing online, and it can feel like a mistake to redirect readers. But this tactic truly will help you, not hurt you.

Don’t think of it as sending readers away from your writing. On the contrary, they’ll think more highly of you and your writing, making it more likely that they return to you in the future.

Find Success Through Honing Your Online Writing Skills

Finding your groove with online writing can be tough, especially if you’re used to other formats, such as book or magazine writing. But by using these tips, you can conquer the steep learning curve and become the best online writer you can be.
