3 Tips for Maintaining Good Health in College

Everybody is aware that having a balanced diet, working out and getting enough rest are the most important factors for maintaining good health. But it seems quite difficult to be done while in college. More often, you are not able to resist the temptation of beer, delicious food and caffeine when you’re with friends or under the stress of courses or exams. So we compiled a few tips to help you stay healthy despite your college lifestyle.

Take Enough Nutrition

Have enough nutritious foods every day. Your body requires over 40 different nutrients to maintain good health, which can only be got from various sources.  Your daily food choice should contain a combination of protein, vegetables, fruits, meat and milk. Now and then you can read some quotes about food for inspiration.

Eat fair shares of each. If you keep different shares moderate and reasonable, it will be easier to eat more types that you need, and therefore you can maintain a balanced diet. What’s a fair share? Here is a reference. A medium-sized apple is one serving. A hamburger equals 2 servings and an ice cream can include as many as 4 servings.

Never skip meals. Skipping meals is pretty common nowadays, but actually it can result in out-of-control hunger and frequently lead to over-indulging. Having some snacks between regular meals will help if you are in a hurry. Just at least you need to make sure you have two balanced meals.

Never eliminate specific foods. It is a known fact that our bodies need various nutrition, so it’s definitely not a good idea to eliminate any specific food from our diets, unless it is necessary and required by medical professionals. Selecting healthier foods such as milk can help you to maintain a balanced diet. Never categorize foods as good or bad. All are necessary.

Drink fresh water! Keep yourself away from coffees, sodas, cokes and other sugary beverages, because they equal 17 teaspoons of sugar per 20oz drink! You know what, sugar is one of sources of empty calories which can take up vital minerals and vitamins in your body. Water not only helps to hydrate, but also is helpful to blood circulation, removing toxins from our bodies and regulating our body temperatures.

Physical and Mind Management

Be active

  • Use more of the stairs and avoid the elevator.
  • Exercise 30 minutes at least every day. If you are not a gym person, that does not matter at all. Simply going outside for walking or running helps a lot. What really matters is that you get moving!

Relax

  • Keep yourself planned and avoid unnecessary stress.
  • Listen to the music.
  • Spare time for daily relaxation and reflection, even if it’s only 10 minutes. 
  • Sleep early and get up early.
  • Allocate about 30 minutes of quiet and relaxing activity before going to bed.
  • Avoid using sleeping pills, even you are under the stress of exam, relationship, etc.
  • Keep in mind sleep is never a waste of time! It’s as significant as taking nutrition and exercise.

Join Social Activities

Join some social activities in your spare time and meet new people and friends. Usually the adjustment to college is a hard thing, because students have to leave the support of their parents and family. Therefore you can consider joining an interest organization or team, volunteering at social organizations, or assisting in any other form you can think of. Any of these will help you maintain social health. The most significant thing to bear in mind is to find the thing you are interested in and enjoy yourself.
